Your website might look fine to you. But visitors don't judge it the way you do — they judge it in about five seconds, usually on a phone, often while doing something else.
Here are seven signs your website is quietly sending customers to your competitors, and what to do about each one.
1. It takes more than 3 seconds to load
Google's own research found that more than half of mobile visitors leave a page that takes longer than three seconds to load. They don't wait — they hit "back" and tap the next result on Google.
Fix: Test your site with Google PageSpeed Insights. Compress images, remove unused plugins, and use modern hosting. A score above 90 on mobile is a good target.
2. Visitors can't tell what you do in five seconds
If your homepage opens with "Welcome to our website" or a vague slogan, visitors have to work to understand you. Most won't.
Fix: Your first headline should say who you help and what result you deliver. Not sure what makes you different? Start with our guide on finding your unique selling point.
3. It's hard to use on a phone
Tiny text, buttons too close together, menus that don't open — on mobile, these are deal-breakers. And most of your visitors are on mobile.
Fix: Open your site on your own phone and try to contact yourself. If anything is fiddly, your customers feel it too.
4. Your contact details are hidden
If someone has to scroll to the bottom of a page, then click "Contact", then fill out a 12-field form — you've lost them.
Fix: Put a clear call to action ("Get a quote", "Book a call") at the top of every page. Add WhatsApp or click-to-call for mobile users. Keep forms short: name, email, message is often enough.
5. There's no proof you're any good
Visitors are deciding whether to trust you with their money. Without reviews, client logos, case studies or photos of real work, you're asking them to take a leap of faith.
Fix: Add three to five testimonials with real names, a few before-and-after examples, or a short case study. Even one strong example beats none.
6. Google can't find it
A beautiful website that nobody finds is a brochure in a drawer. If you don't appear when people search for your service in your area, you're missing your highest-intent customers.
Fix: Make sure every page has a clear title and description, set up Google Search Console, and create a free Google Business Profile.
7. It hasn't changed in years
Outdated prices, old photos, a copyright year from 2019 — small details tell visitors the business might not be active, or doesn't care about details.
Fix: Review your site every quarter. Update offers, add recent work, and refresh anything that no longer reflects your business.
How many did you tick?
- 0–1: You're in good shape — keep improving.
- 2–3: You're likely losing a meaningful number of enquiries every month.
